Raw Nature Photography
Raw nature photography is about photographing wild birds and animals behaving naturally in their own environment. The subjects can, and often do, choose to behave exactly as they wish.
RAW
WILD. FREE. UNTAMED. NATURAL.
Fundamentally its a challenge for the photographer. Its about trying to predict how wildlife will behave based on external factors such as weather, terrain and time of year – as well of course as the subject’s behaviour. I posted at the time about why I felt the need to change direction.
So if you are thinking about coming along with ebirder please bear this in mind. Of course, I will do everything I can to get you amazing images – like I have for many happy travellers over the years. However, it does mean that nothing is guaranteed. It does mean if everything comes together that you will get unique images or a subject behaving naturally in an outstanding setting.

RAW NATURE. WHAT IT IS
- Subjects are not attracted in any way.
- Subjects behave entirely naturally.
- Entirely random. High Risk.
- Subject untamed. High Reward.
- Situation delivered by nature.
RAW NATURE. WHAT IT ISN'T
- Subjects generally attracted with bait
- Subjects tamed with food/mate/shelter
- Set up. Predictable.
- Manufactured. Almost Guaranteed.
- Situation provided by human touch.
Raw nature photography isn’t better or worse than other types of nature photography – it’s just my preference! I have used ‘pay and display’ photography hides in the past and will no doubt use them again in the future. I just prefer to be out and about. Taking my chances. Waiting for that special, and unique. moment.
